Cozy Retro Classic - Bajaj Chetak mounted
Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Retro Classic | 5 Comments »The Cozy Retro Sidecar in dark gray with light gray trim fitted to a smaller displacement Chetak scooter. This unit is setup for right-hand drive / left-hand mount. All units shipped to North or South America will be for left-hand drive / right-hand mount unless otherwise specified. Note the black powder coated trim and the spare tire on the back of the sidecar. The spare tire is an extra cost option that includes both the tire / rim and the cover and is especially useful for the Vespa owner who will then have both a spare tire for their scooter and their sidecar. The spare tire can also be mounted between the sidecar and scooter to allow use of the luggage rack. A spare tire mount securely welded to the frame between the sidecar and the scooter is standard on all Cozy sidecars.
The owner has chosen to remove the included windscreen from the sidecar, however the tonneau cover that is included in the base price of every Cozy sidecar, fits just as well when either the sport or the standard windscreen is fitted.
This is a very good combination for short haul urban transportation on congested streets as this provides considerable cargo capacity even when carrying a passenger to allow for useful shopping.
Note that the following 8 items are included in the base price for all Cozy sidecars: (1) front bumper,(2) side guard, (3) passenger assist step, (4) tonneau (dust) cover, (5) luggage / utility rack (spare tire carrier installed at rear of sidecar by owner on this unit), (6) frame mounted spare tire carrier, (7) windshield, (8) factory finish paint (medium gray standard on all stock units, Cozy factory colors available at no extra cost on special order)
Fusion Plus Kappa Side-Car
Thursday, June 5th, 2008 Posted in Kappa | No Comments »Here is a very strange “fused” sidecar still being made by Sakuma Engineering in Japan. The main scooter is a Honda Helix that has the body of a sidecar fixed directly to the outer shell of the Helix. It is an odd looking thing, If I do say so… Here is a translation (loose) of the product on the Sakuma website:
The motorcycle, the side car you attach the raincoat sidecar fusion plus the raincoat sidecar, lightly and lightly it is something which was remodeled to the motorcycle and it does. Doing remodelling application in transport bureau, it is the new vehicle where you were born the side car of three passengers you attached lawfully and as a motorcycle lightly and changed. The scooter style of the future feeling which is unified could guarantee the wide riding in a car space. The frame where this body rides consists of the rectangular metal tubing, we guarantee sufficient strength. Suspension adopts Neidhart type, suspension system using trailing type, has contributed to the maneuverability of comfortable riding comfort and the optimum sidecar. It is light, it makes continuous vehicle inspection, unnecessary with holding down to the inside of the frame of the motorcycle, can guarantee high economical efficiency, furthermore, the highway, can travel with two people, or three passengers.
All I really have are these two ad’s from Doug Bingham. Most of the stuff I have found is in Japanese. There is a club website if you want to check it out:

Cushman
Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 Posted in Cushman, Manufacturers | No Comments »Most know the Cushman story; The American scooter company that failed to compete with the European scooter craze.
Did you know they also had sidecars? Not surprising due to their success, Cushman provided the “Side Kar” as a dealer installed option.
Here’s a great ad from 1938 for the Auto-Glide and Side Kar
Two more Auto-Glide ads from the late 1930’s

California Side Car
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 Posted in California, Manufacturers | No Comments »I admit I do not know much about the California Side Car company (yes, the name is two words; “Side Car”). I know that they did play a significant roll in the 80’s and early 90’s American scooter scene, although they did not fair so well in European markets. (perhaps due to the availability of older sidecars and the Watson). They were light weight sidecars and readily available alternatives to increasingly hard to find original Vespa, Globe, Steib and other out of production rigs here in the States. I imagine that they were also very popular here in the states because they fit that pre-eBay niche market for hard to find items (God bless eBay!!!). If anyone knows the story of why they decided to give up on the scooter market, please let me know.
Here is some great information about the American sidecar legend. Note that the California Side Car for scooters is out of production, but they do have a website with Motorcycle sidecars. check it out: http://www.californiasidecar.com/
Many thanks to Dan Rickard for providing the scanned photo’s and flyers.
- Installation instructions - Mostly for the “Friendship” and “Companion” sidecars which are for motorcycles. Much of the concepts are the same for scooters. You can download the entire scanned pages in zipped format here. (5.7 mb)
- An article about the company - As ran in 1980 in “Touring Bike”
Original California Side Car flyers (click to view original size).

Note the MOUNTING challenge: “We challenge you to find a scooter we can’t fit!”
Check out the personalized note and pricing, great stuff!
