Cozy Steel Raptor - Honda Aero Mounted

Monday, June 9th, 2008 Posted in Steel Raptor | 4 Comments »

Another Cozy Steel Raptor sidecar, this time attached to the Kinetic Engineering Ltd. (India) derivative of the proven Honda Aero 125 (Lead 125 outside of the US) with two-stroke engine and Varamatic transmission for right-hand drive.

While scooters of this displacement (and smaller) frequently have sidecars attached to them in India, these are generally used in highly urbanized areas with considerable congestion and high traffic density, thus not requiring high acceleration or top speed. Additionally, the average Indian is considerably lighter than the typical American. A larger displacement scooter is suggested for American driving conditions.

Careful reading of the bottom view indicates that this is a vehicle for a disabled individual showing how a Cozy sidecar can enable individuals with conditions which would otherwise not allow safe riding, to enjoy the simple pleasure of riding on a scooter, and the benefits of rapid and convenient scooter transportation.

This sidecar is equipped with matte black powder coated trim. Note the “assist bar” on the inside of the windshield. The owner has chosen to mount the sidecar spare on the rear of the scooter for a more sporting appearance. This is a custom application but is available on special order.

Note that the following 8 items are included in the base price for all Cozy sidecars: (1) front bumper,(2) side guard, (3) passenger assist step, (4) tonneau (dust) cover, (5) luggage / utility rack (not installed by owner on this unit), (6) frame mounted spare tire carrier, (7) windshield, (8) factory finish paint (medium gray standard on all stock units, Cozy factory colors available at no extra cost on special order)

Cozy Steel Raptor - Helix Mounted

Monday, June 9th, 2008 Posted in Steel Raptor | 3 Comments »

The Steel Raptor is very close in appearence to the Vespa sidecars of the 50s and 60s. It is shown here attached to a Honda Helix. After several tanks of gas there does not seem to be any major change in fuel consumption (still in the low to mid 50’s in mixed town/rural driving). 3/4 throttle cruising speed is about 55 MPH.

A Cozy scooter Steel Raptor (Cozy 200) with 10 inch Vespa pattern tire mounted to George’s Honda Helix using a sub-frame. A frame mounted spare tire holder is standard on scooter model sidecars. The sub-frame is over-length, both to be more universal for larger displacement tubular frame scooters and to mount a steering damper if desired. Some wobble is noticeable at very low speeds when starting but is easily controllable, so a damper has not been mounted. The sub-frame length can be trimmed using a hack-saw if desired. The Aspencade emblem on the front of the Helix is not a standard factory item.

Head on view of the Cozy Steel Raptor attached to a Honda Helix.

This sidecar has matte black powdercoat trim to match the black trim on the Helix. This is a special order option available at no extra cost. Stock units will have chrome trim. Unit is shown mounted as close as possible to the scooter. Road tests indicate that it is desirable to have a slightly wider spacing comparable to compact autos.

Right rear 3/4 view.

Note that the end of the sidecar is about in line with the end of the scooter when the suggested distance between the center of the rear scooter wheel and sidecar wheel is set.

A passenger’s eye view of the windshield and grab bar. This grab bar is constructed from 1/2 inch (13 mm) heavy steel tubing and is both a mounting bracket for the wind shield and a grab bar or assist handle for the sidecar passenger or when reaching to the nose of the sidecar to store something. Passengers will tend to use the wind shield as an assist handle even when it does not have this type of reinforcement, so this is a very worthwhile feature. The windshield is constructed from heavy 1/4 inch ( 6 mm) shatterproof medium tinted plastic. Bar is finished in flat black but appears to be chrome because of direct sunlight.

Cozy Retro Classic

Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Retro Classic | No Comments »

Other mounting examples:

The Retro Classic is rugged sidecar of all steel construction which has evolved over many years to exactly meet the needs of a scooter or light motorcycle owner for a utility sidecar. In India it is one of the most popular styles of sidecar because it has both good cargo capacity and passenger comfort. This sidecar, although more ruggedly constructed, is very similar in appearance to the vintage European sidecars frequently seen in photographs of the classic scooters in the 50’s and 60’s. A motorcycle version of the Retro is available with a larger motorcycle tire and wire wheel. All units in stock are finished in the Cozy factory medium gray enamel.

Information about a Retro Classic on a Bajaj Chetak

The “Retro Classic” is cozy’s version of the traditional utility sidecar. Shown is the domestic Indian left-hand mount / right-hand drive version. For North / South America and continental European use, the sidecar mounts on the other side for left-hand drive. The “Retro Classic” is constructed from heavy gauge steel for strength and durability. The model is setting on the luggage/utility rack on the rear of the sidecar showing that it is strong enough to take considerable weight and is not just for decoration. The sidecar is finished in cozy’s medium blue which matches the Vespa (Bajaj) factory color. Notice the mud on the tires. This scooter is in daily use and is not a “hangar queen” used only for photographs.

Note that the “new” model windshield shown on the other sidecars is available unless you specifically request the classic windshield shown.

Note that the following 8 items are included in the base price for all Cozy sidecars: (1) front bumper,(2) side guard, (3) passenger assist step, (4) tonneau (dust) cover, (5) luggage / utility rack (not installed by owner on this unit), (6) frame mounted spare tire carrier, (7) windshield, (8) factory finish paint (medium gray standard on all stock units, all Cozy factory colors available at no extra cost on special order) Keep this in mind when comparing the Cozy to other makes.

Cozy Road Rocket

Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Road Rocket | 2 Comments »

The “Road Rocket” is cozy’s version of the classic Zeppelin style (AKA Cucumber Nose) sidecar in all steel construction. This style has been popular for at least 65 years and shows no sign of becoming dated. In India this is the most popular sidecar for motorcycle mounting. Motorcycle sidecars with a motorcycle tire and wire wheel are also available.

Other mounting examples:

The Cozy “Road Rocket” sidecar attaches perfectly to Vespa and its derivatives such as the Bajaj with a specially developed mounting kit. This combination is finished in cozy’s deep Midnight Blue paint. (other colors available) The front bumper, sideguard and luggage/utility rack are finished in cozy’s standard thick hand-buffed high-luster chrome. Shown is a left-hand model for countries with right-hand drive such as India, Japan, Australia and England. American units will be supplied in right hand mount for left-hand drive unless specially ordered. A Cozy sidecar includes the mounting hardware, windshield, front bumper, sideguard, luggage/utility rack, tonneau cover and finish paint in the base price. A motorcycle version of the “Road Rocket” with appropriate mounting hardware and a larger motorcycle tire is also available.

Velorex Sidecar

Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Velorex | No Comments »

Here is some information from the The JAWA Specialists in Germany:

In 1938 the czech brothers František and Mojmir Stransky started a bicycle repair shop in a small town in the north-west of Czechia called Parnik. They named the business MOTO-VELO-sport. Velo is the slavonic word for bicycle.

The brothers had knowledge of the MORGAN 3-wheeler that was produced at the time in England. They wanted to do something similar, but much lighter. Something like a hybrid between a car and a motorcycle for folks who have only little money to spent for transport.

In 1943 the first such vehicle did appear. A tubular frame construction covered with textile tissue and sporting quite a few bicycle parts. They called it
“OSKAR”. The name derived from the czech “Kara na ose” which means cart on an axle.

When the war ended in 1945 means of motorised transport were more than scarse, so the Stransky brothers did see a high demand for the vehicles and stepped up production. As stability and power of the vehicles was too week, the chassis was strengthened and that in turn asked for stronger engines. The brothers experimented with different engines, amongst them engines from the just restated JAWA production.

Start of the 50s, the Czech economy was restructed along communist lines. Factories became nationalised or grouped into cooperatives. In 1950, the Stransky brothers, too, had been forced into such a co-op. This co-op comprised 6 different factories situated around Hradec Kralove a town in the czech giants mountain region. All of them producing automotive and bicycle parts The co-op´s administration was set up at Hradec whereas the 6 companies remained where they had been.

The Co-op was called “Velo”, to be renamed 2 years later VELOREX, clearly adding the word export. And indeed, export begun to be an important factor those days. Export however to only one predominant market - the Soviet Union. This market demanded motorcycle combinations from its Czechoslovak ally.

This is a subset of the information, read on here

Cozy Road Rocket - Royal Enfield Mounted

Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Road Rocket | 15 Comments »

The popular Cozy “Road Rocket” sidecar mounted on India’s work horse motorcycle, the Enfield 500cc Bullet for use in right-hand drive traffic. The “Road Rocket” is a good match for most “thumper” [single cylinder] motorcycles with 250 cc or more displacement intended for road use including the Suzuki Savage. This unit has also been satisfactorily installed on lower displacement twins such as the Honda 250cc Rebel. Note the black powder coated front bumper, sideguard, and passenger step. The sidecar is finish painted in cozy’s deep lustrous factory raven black paint which is an excellent match to the Enfield black. Remember: a Cozy sidecar includes in the base price the finish paint, the front bumper, the sideguard, the luggage/utility rack, the passenger assist step, the windshield and tonneau cover.

Cozy Road Rocket - Honda Helix Mounted

Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Road Rocket | 3 Comments »

The larger displacement scooters such as the Helix seem to be in better proportion to the larger sidecars such as the Cozy motorcycle Road Rocket. The larger motorcycle wheel also gives a better ride on rough roads. After two tanks of gas there does not seem to be any major change in fuel consumption (still in the low to mid 50’s in mixed town/rural driving). 3/4 throttle cruising speed is about 55 MPH.

Cozy Road Rocket - Vespa/Bajaj Mounted

Friday, June 6th, 2008 Posted in Road Rocket | 5 Comments »

An all steel Cozy Rocket sidecar attached to the Vespa derivative Bajaj scooter for right-hand drive operation. Left-hand drive / right-hand mount units will be supplied for all North and South American orders unless a RHD unit is specifically requested. This unit has the popular black powder coat trim option and the Indian specification windscreen.

While not quite as “sporting” as the alternative windscreen shown in some of the other illustrations, it is very effective in keeping the wind blast from the passenger. There is a sport windscreen that is also available, or you can get both to provide improved passenger protection in colder weather as these interchange quickly. Notice the spare tire mount between the sidecar and scooter. This mount is standard on all Cozy sidecars. The spare tire/rim and cover are avilable at a very economical price when ordered with the sidecar. An alternative is a replacement rack which mounts the sidecar spare on the rear of the sidecar. Note that the base price of a Cozy includes the front bumper, side bumper, windshield, luggage / utility rack, passenger assist step, tonneau cover, frame spare tire mount and factory finish paint. Be sure to determine what is included in the base price when comparison shopping.

A Cozy Road Rocket mounted to a classic Vespa. The axial trim strips have not been installed on the sidecar a “no cost” option if specified when the car is ordered) and both the sidecar and the Vespa have been painted in the light green commonly used on early Vespas. The owner has decided to forego windshields on both the scooter and sidecar for a sportier appearance and has not mounted the side guard on the sidecar. This beautiful combination is a German unit and German TÜV vehicle standards are among the most stringent in the world showing how a Cozy sidecar meets all requirements within its design range. The front clearance light on the sidecar is a German unit required to meet TÜV regulations. Note that the front right hand running light has been removed from the scooter in accordance with German TÜV regulations. Although not visible, the same modifications were required at the rear
